Dogged Persistence
Published in Hardcover by Golden Gryphon Pr (01 June, 2001)
Author: Kevin J. Anderson
Average review score:

Dark and Luminous
Dogged Persistence is a collection of stories with mostly disutopian themes. All are well-written, but the accumulative effort is somewhat depressing. No wonder Anderson was selected to write X-Files novels.

Like all good SF authors, Anderson sees more than the obvious in new technology and scientific speculation. While many of the basic themes in these stories have been used by other authors, Anderson adds new directions and possibilities.

For example, the first story, "Fondest Memories", employs the themes of cloning and induced memories to bring us a quietly, subtly horrible tale. And the title story is a conspiracy tale that was later expanded to the X-Files novel "Antibodies", yet it is also a very private story of love and betrayal. The Dune story portrays the trapping of Atreides soldiers in the shield wall caves by Harkonnen troops, yet is really a story of homesickness and a miracle.

As Kristine Kathryn Rusch implies in the Introduction, the best story in Anderson's career may well be "The Ghost of Christmas Always". At least Dean Smith thought so. While next to last in the book, this fantasy of Charles Dickens and the ghost of his sister-in-law has a luminous presence that lingers. Like "A Christmas Carol", this story may well become a classic. Sometimes an author gets it exactly right.

Kevin J. Anderson can write a great short story. Don't just take my word for it; read these stories and see for yourself. By the way, his novels are pretty good too.

A "must" for all Kevin Anderson fans!
Dogged Persistence is Kevin Anderson's first book-length collection of short stories and provide a range of fine fantasies which cover everything from nanotechnology and questions of humanity to a horror story set in Africa. Whether it's hard science fiction or fantasy, Anderson's many talents and ability to weave an engrossing tale are aptly displayed in this collection.

A splendid anthology
Kevin J. Anderson is a seasoned and gift writer whose science fiction novels have won him a wide recognition in the genre and a very loyal readership. Now the Golden Gryphon Press (itself an outstanding small press publisher specializing in fantasy and science fiction) has published Anderson's Dogged Persistence, a splendid anthology of his short story writings that will prove to be a "must read" for the legions of his fans, and send those encountering his work within these pages for the first time on an enthusiastic search for the rest of his novels. The original stories comprising this superb compendium include: Fondest of Memories; Music Played on the Strings of Time; Tide Pools; Reflections in a Magnetic Mirror (with Doug Beason); Entropy Ranch; Dogged Persistence; Human, Martian -- One, Two, Three; Scientific Romance; Canals in the Sand; Dune: A Whisper of Caladan Seas (with Brian Herbert); Prisoner of War; Much at Stake; New Recruits; Final Performance; The Old Man and the Cherry Tree; Sea Dreams (with Rebecca Moesta); The Ghost of Christmas Always; and Drumbeats (with Neil Pearl).

Emotional Longevity: What Really Determines How Long We Live
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (10 March, 2003)
Authors: Norman B. Anderson and P. Elizabeth Anderson
Average review score:

Insightful and contemplative "must read"
Emotional Longevity explores the dimensions of health and well being in a unique and refreshing way. Though based on research, it offers a refreshing (and understandable) perspective differentiating it from other books of this genre. It clearly defines and illustrates how each of the elements affecting longevity play out in our lives and in the lives of our children. It juxtaposes science with vignettes, making it not only informative but compelling as well. It is an insightful and contemplative "must read."

Good adjunctively or solo
...

When I picked this book up, I thought for sure that there was nothing else to be learned, but I was completely wrong. For once, this book is backed by scientific research and the results are shown for experiments such as positive and negative outlooks, overcoming illness, likelihood to die early, the list goes on and on. 'Emotional Longevity' does not indicate the length of an emotion, but rather teaches us to view things in a light that will produce a much higher quality of life, and will ultimately lead to a much healthier, longer, and more fulfilling, realistic lifestyle. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true. And it's different from all the others to boot.

Highly recommended from a person who highly needs good books like this. :) (Who doesn't?)

Absolutely the best book on health available today
If you care about living long and well, this is the book for you. When I saw it at my local bookstore it literally jumped off the shelf. You can't always judge a book by its cover, but in this case the contents lived up to the promise on the jacket, "What Really Determines How Long You Live."

There are many things that I could say about this exceptional book. The most important is that at a time when we are deluged by the latest hype on health and happiness, this book, by one of the premier researchers in the country, gives us the real facts about holistic health.

I've been working in this field for 38 years and consider myself one of the experts, but I learned new things in every chapter.

At a time when Gender Medicine is emerging as a new field of health, this book gives us the facts to help us understand why men continue to live sicker and die sooner. It doesn't have to be that way. We can all improve how long and how joyfully we live.

If you buy one book this year on Mind/Body/Spirit, make it Emotional Longevity. You'll be glad you did.

Empty Harvest: Understanding the Link Between Our Food, Our Immunity, and Our Planet
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam (April, 1993)
Authors: Mark Anderson and Bernard Jensen
Average review score:

Easy to read, and to comprehend
This book is very profound. While browsing through the local bookstore, the title of the book jumped out at me and basically told me, "OK.. you will buy me".

I was psyched to read this book simply because of the title, even though when I skimmed through it in the store it looked great. This book is one of the best books I have read when it comes to every aspect of nutrition and health, all rolled into one. I was very impressed.

I agree with the authors views 100% on how man is killing man, and his advice on how to counteract the craziness is exceptional. I would recommend this book to anyone who stumbles upon this review.

A Book EVERYONE Should Read !
Empty Harvest clearly explains the link between the lack of minerals in our crop soils and the modern day diseases associated with mineral deficiencies (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.). The author shows many excellent examples of how mankind is slowly destroying it's future by robbing the Earth of the very things that give us and support life itself.

Empty Harvest is a "wake-up call" for us to start changing our destructive ways, or poor physical and mental health and disease will dominate our lives into the 21st Century and beyond!

By following many of the guidelines in Empty Harvest (especially eating foods grown in nutrient rich soils & taking plant derived major & trace mineral supplements from organic sources), we can maintain or regain optimum health.

Anyone who thinks they are getting all the essential vitamins and minerals they need from the produce section at their local supermarket needs to read Empty Harvest TODAY!

If you really want to understand nutrition and health.
This book explains many aspects of nutrition and what we have done wrong over the years with our diets. I have never seen a book with more quality information and that information is exactly what we need to look at for the causes of many of the diseases we see today. I am a Doctor who deals a lot with nutrition and it is the best book I have ever read on the subject.

A Field Day
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (October, 2000)
Author: Keith L. Anderson
Average review score:

This Non-baseball Fan Loved It
I'm not a big baseball fan but I couldn't put this book down! I like a story that's true to life but has some fun along the way. This book was all of that and more. I laughed, I cried, I learned some lessons and felt good to the core when I was done. What more could you ask for?

A Real Story
Anderson tells it the way it should be and in fact the way it is (and was) when you are a kid. Baseball is the common demoninator that allowed barriers to be crossed. Kids have to be taught to not like people of different races and backgrounds. Left alone Kids will just "enjoy the game". This book is a wonderful lesson for us all. It is a true "American Story". And based on a "real life" experience.

Women will like this story too
While this is most certainly a story about baseball and racism, it is also a warm story. The main character in the story warms a mother's heart. I'll be buying a few of these books for my kids and grandkids.

First Aid for the NCLEX-RN: Computerized Adaptive Testing (Book with Diskette)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (15 January, 1997)
Author: Donald L. Anderson
Average review score:

The best I have seen.
I took his NCLEX review in Boston, and I don't recall that Don mentioned this book. Needless to say, the five-day class was fine, and he had a handout for the class. But the five day class was way too fast to get it all down on paper, so having this book (I found it in a library) and reviewing all the points at my own pace really works. I wish he had the third edition published so I could use it.

I passed the NCLEX and this book saved my life!
Hello! I have been a nurse for 4 years but I remember how terribly stressful it was to prepare for the boards!!! Relax, take a deep breath and buy this book! Out of all the books I had this one was the best. It gave you strategies to remember things, it went through each section of nursing that is covered on the boards with clarity (only focusing on really what you need to pass) and it had questions that most resembled those that were on the NCLEX. It also has a great section on all the pharmocology that you need to know. Every time that I meet someone who is about to take the boards I recommend this book. As I said, it saved my life!!!!

Covers all subject areas
First Aid for the NCLEX-RN is an excellent book in preparing for the nclex. It covers all important areas with a special focus area. It is broken into categories which enables the person to retain the information.. In addition, the MEDS section is well put together, it gives the side effect and nursing implementations. ...THanks for such an excellent book... Calvin R. Wallace, RN, BSN, MS....

Flute Solos
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (July, 1999)
Authors: Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull, and Jeff Rona
Average review score:

Jethro Tull Sheet Music for Flute
I bought this book when it first came out (which was about 1978) which was also about the time I started playing the flute in an efort to emulate my musical hero, Ian Anderson. The fact that it is still available is testimony to it's value.

This book contains some brief instructions on how to do some of the special techniques Ian uses. It also decodes how those special techniques are indicated in the sheet music. Since this came out in 1978, there are no pieces in it that were produced later than that date. This means the most recent material in it comes from Songs From the Woods. This includes the easy Fire at Midnight, the somewhat more difficult Cup of Wonder and the more difficult Whistler (which is actually easier to play on a tin whistle, except you can't switch from the D whistle to the G whistle fast enough to play it live, so Ian doesn't). That touches on the real value of this book. Even a beginner can get through modest renditions of Living in the Past and Fire at Midnight and perhaps even Look into the Sun, while the extract from A Passion Play is extremely difficult. There is material here for all levels of players, along with motivation to get better so that things like My God can be attempted.
Contents:
Baker St. Muse (Nice Little Tune/Crash Barrier Waltzer), Big Dipper, Bouree (of course), Bungle in the Jungle, The Chequered Flag, Cross=eyed Mary, Cup of Wonder, Fire at Midnight, For Later, Living in the Past, Look into the Sun, My God, Nothing is Easy (including playing this solo the way it is written), Passion play edit., Thick as a Brick edit. (instrumental from "I've come down from the upper class..." section), The Third Hoorah, The Whistler, The Witch's Promise.

Now if only somebody would put out sheet music for Divinities!

Congratulations!
Congratulations to the author and editors of this book for attempting to capture Ian Anderson's most wild solo passages! Granted, with some determination and lots of listening, Ians solos could be figured out... the hard part is finding out all of the other odd things he does... The author of this book has done a wonderful job of accurately notating this book, (including noting Ian's frequent use of harmonics, dark tones, and singing/playing simultaneously.)

I found a few notes/rhythms that are different from the actual sound recordings, but since most of Ian's work in this area is improv, it can be interpreted many different ways.

All of these solos are from the late 60's/early 70's... I would like to eventually see a book of some newer songs as well. Overall, this is a very entertaining book, with some very challenging passages... just make sure you have your favorite Tull CD's handy so that you can play along!

A necessary tool for all flute players!
If you play flute, you *need* this book. Hours of entertainment, trust me on this.

Full House: The Story of the Anderson Quintuplets
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (June, 1986)
Authors: Karen Anderson and Jo Robinson
Average review score:

Super book!
This book is one of my favorites! The day-to-day living of a family with quintuplets is captivating. The pictures are precious. You will come away feeling that you know the family. It is wonderful how the Anderson quintuplets were raised as regular children. I also have wondered how the family is doing now, but have not found any information.

How are they now?
I loved this book!
The pictures are so fantastic that I can't help looking at them again and again.
I really want to know how all the Andersons are doing now; I've been searching to know avail. After reading this book, they seem very familier to me. I just envy them.
Anybody know anything?
Must read; a great book for all parents and those who love children.

Incredible biography about raising quintuplets in the l960's
Can you imagine having quintuplets when it was hardly ever heard of? Karen Anderson describes her emotions, the physical process, and incredible experience of giving birth to quintuplets. This narrative lets you into their lives on a very personal basis, with many funny moments as well as great parental advice.

This book should be published again for the next generation. The hardcover edition includes excellent photographs from the birth of the quints to age 6, as well as comments from Dr. T. Berry Brazelton. A must-read!

Gaits of Gold
Published in Hardcover by CrossOver Publications (January, 1998)
Authors: Brenda Imus, Mickey Anderson, and Brita B. Eadie
Average review score:

An excellent resource!
Gaited horses require different handling than non-gaited horses and this book is one of the very few printed resources available to help you, especially if you are a novice. If you have a gaited horse or think you might be interested in one you will find this book indispensable.

Wish I had seen this book earlier
This is by far the most helpful thing I have read on gaited horses. Wish I had seen it before I started working with my Peruvian. It would have alleviated a lot of the uncertainty and anxiety in setting his gaits. Extremely well illustrated and written for the non-expert gaited horse owner. I have purchased extra copies for even my experienced gaited-horse friends. This is a must-have for everyone who rides and loves gaited horses.

great training tips for the Gaited Horse
Gaits of Gold is truly a detailed book on gaited horses. It goes into how the horses conformation makes a differences in how it preforms gaits. Technics on improving the gait, what are the different gaits. In general it is a well wrtten book that will help anyone improve their horse. The illistrations are very good also.
